Wet soil accepts less wastewater

A disposal area relies on unsaturated soil to receive and treat effluent. When surrounding soil becomes wet, the system has less capacity to accept additional flow.

Rain does not necessarily cause the original defect. It can expose a field already operating near its limit, a drainage problem that directs runoff toward the field or a household loading issue.

02

Reduce loading and protect the area

Space out laundry and other high-volume water use during saturated conditions. Keep roof drains, grading changes and irrigation from concentrating water over the tank or disposal area.

  • Do not drive on soft soil over the system
  • Do not open tank lids to relieve pressure
  • Keep people and pets away from surfacing wastewater
  • Document when and where symptoms appear

When to request service

Whole-home slow drains, sewage odour, a high-water alarm, a backup or wastewater surfacing deserve professional attention. Share the recent weather and drainage pattern when requesting help.
